Meanwhile, great characters, constant menace, fun dialog, great combat, crunchy leveling details, absolutely everything good in a litRPG series. I was there as Matt book five sent Jeff into two minute laugh breakdown. Matt Dinniman is a master of set-up and payoff. I listened to all of Jeff Hays' cold reads for this book. I've gone back and forth through the series five times now, picking up on more and more throwaway moments that ended up being important later. Every chapter, every arc, often every sentence has a later payoff. Even Carl hasn't matched Shackleton's level of insane plans yet. Other genres have better books, such as North by Shackleton or Memoirs by Grant, these have real life insanity that's hard to compete with. Dungeon Crawler Carl is the highest quality SF&F series I've read. The stuff not in the movie, not quite as good. Most good series have a good core but various poor parts that get glossed over. Perhaps the best plotted SF series ever writtenĪs a long-time fantasy and science fiction reader, I try to read everything good.

Adept at glances that render speech unnecessary and, for a yearning boy, rid the world of hope, she also can grant the wickedest hint of a smile that soothes all ills. Paige is a wonder as Jordana, who brings Oliver down to earth abruptly with her simple but at that age savage statements of honesty. Roberts plays Oliver as a young man in Wales whose grasp of imagined possibilities is greater than his grip on reality, and he manages it with great charm. Jaunty and sly with a great many laughs, the film also has on its soundtrack several typically witty and melodic songs written and performed by Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys.Ĭraig Roberts as Oliver Tate and Yasmin Paige as his beloved Jordana are perfect, with each demonstrating a pleasing agility in vocal and facial expression that adds immeasurably to the drollery. Through this deeply personal story, Napoli paints a magnificent portrait of the Italian Renaissance, both tragic and triumphant. The romantic in me would have preferred a different ending, but I give the author credit for faithfully providing an ending that was more realistic and fit with the period. The author provides rich details of life and events during the Renaissance, as well as some of the very real people from that era. Although he is the heir to the most powerful family in Florence and the two fall in love, Elisabetta’s father finds a more suitable match for his daughter in his new wife’s brother-in-law, another silk merchant. Readers are introduced to a young Elisabetta, the daughter of a silk merchant. Perfect starting point for a historical fiction novel, and The Smile puts forth a very convincing tale to answer those burning questions. The Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world, and there has been continuous speculation about who she was and why she is smiling. Or if it did, they both had a very good reason for it and everything will be fine. I'm coning up with ten different ways in my head that this scene isn't what it looks like.
